Howard strong in net, but Red Wings lose again, 2-1, to Winnipeg

When the Red Wings started well and then faltered, Jimmy Howard did what he does and kept them in the game.

Howard turned away 20 shots in the second period Friday at Little Caesars Arena but the Wings lost another close game, falling 2-1 to the Winnipeg Jets. Ten games into their season, the Wings are 1-7-2.

Andreas Athanasiou had a strong first period but sullied his performance with two trips to the penalty box in the second period. Howard finished with 38 saves.

Up for grabs

The Wings went on a power play in the opening minute of the third period, but their best chance was Anthony Mantha’s shot from the slot, which Brandon Tanev blocked.
