Detroit Red Wings wobbly on Day 1 at IIHF World Championship

The Detroit Red Wings did not have a good start to the World Championship.

In Cologne, Germany, the USA lost 2-1 to the host country in Group A action despite outshooting Germany, 43-27. Dylan Larkin did assist on Connor Murphy’s goal, and Jimmy Howard stopped 25 of 27 shots. The Germans had NHL veteran Thomas Greiss in net, where he made 42 saves. The U.S. is coached by Jeff Blashill and also features defenseman Danny DeKeyser, who was in the penalty box for the winning goal.

USA next plays Denmark on Sunday.

In Paris, Petr Mrazek allowed three goals on 27 shots as his Czech Republic lost, 4-1, to Canada in Group B action.
