CALGARY, Alberta — Special teams have extinguished the Detroit Red Wings, rendering that hot start a cooling memory.

They surrendered three shorthanded goals while squandering their own man advantages Thursday at the Saddledome, slinking off with a 5-1 loss that looked uglier because it followed a 5-1 loss at Vancouver and a 5-2 home loss to Toronto. The loss to the Maple Leafs can’t be pinned on special teams, but the Wings blew 97 seconds with two extra skaters against the Canucks while allowing 3 goals short handed, and looked bad again against the Flames.
