Detroit Red Wings signed Alex Biega to contract extension. Here's why that made sense

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman made a low-key move on defense, extending Alex Biega through next season.

The one-year, $875,000 deal makes sense for a team in rebuilding mode. Biega, 31, is a respectable third-pair defenseman/reserve who can kill penalties.

Yzerman acquired Biega Oct. 6 from the Vancouver Canucks for forward David Pope, a former draft pick who struggled at the AHL level.
