HAMAR, NORWAY -- A record that stood for more than 80 years was broken Sunday when two Norwegian hockey teams played in the longest recorded hockey game in the world.
The previous record was set by the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Maroons in 1936 played a six-overtime game in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Red Wings won that game 1-0 on a goal by Mud Bruneteau.
The total time for that game was 176 minutes and 30 seconds. Nearly two full games more than a standard game.
However, Sunday's game between the Storhamar Dragons and the Sparta Warriors lasted for 217 minutes and 14 seconds, a full 40 minutes longer than the previous record.
