Detroit Red Wings get point, lose to Islanders in shootout, 4-3

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t stay out of the penalty box and couldn’t get out of their own zone.

It took a terrific performance from Jonathan Bernier and a big night from Thomas Vanek to salvage Saturday’s game at Nassau Coliseum against the New York Islanders. They earned a point after falling in a shootout, 4-3.

The Wings scored twice in the first period but then were hampered by six straight trips to the penalty box. It took pulling Bernier for an extra attacker to force the game past regulation, with Vanek completing a tic-tac-toe play from Andreas Athanasiou and Niklas Kronwall with a minute to spare.
