ST. LOUIS — If he helps the Detroit Red Wings return to the playoffs as soon as next season, there’s a bonus in it for Jimmy Howard.
The Wings signed Howard to a one-year extension on Wednesday, worth $4 million in base salary and as much as $1.1 million in playoff bonuses. The Free Press reported Tuesday the deal was imminent.
The bonus is tiered based on the playoff appearance and how many games Howard will have played (35, 40, 45, 50 up to 55). There's also a bonus if the Wings win their first-round playoff series, and another if they win a second-round series.
