Sometimes, you gotta stand up for yourself, but the risk-reward can cost a team

A few years ago, the Detroit Red Wings watched their most skilled teammate drop his gloves, in equal parts delight and fright.

When Pavel Datsyuk emerged from his fight with Corey Perry unscathed, relief won the day. It is a balancing act when skilled players fight, as the risk of injury weighs against the fact that sometimes, one has to stand up for one self.

Anthony Mantha did so Thursday night in Tampa Bay, and as a result will miss the rest of the season, starting with Saturday's game against Toronto, after suffering a fractured finger.
