Tom Gores, Consumers Energy pledge $2 million to send Flint kids to college

FLINT, MI -- Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and the Consumers Energy Foundation have pledged $2 million in seed money to start a Flint Promise program that could start awarding college scholarships to the graduating class of 2018.

Matching $1-million commitments from Gores and Consumers were announced in a news conference at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint Wednesday, Aug. 23, and will be used to build the program from the ground up with support from institutions including the University of Michigan-Flint, Mott Community College and Kettering University.

Details of the program are still being developed by a group that includes the three area colleges, the foundation, the Flint School District, Crim Fitness Foundation, Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce, FlintNOW Foundation, Genesee Intermediate School District, the Hagerman Foundation and United Way of Genesee County.
