Team officials always talk about a player ‘earning their spot’ or ‘we’re just looking for the best players, it’s an open competition’ but, the reality is, most of the places on a roster are decided well beforehand.
The NFL is a bit different than the NBA, in that not as many contracts are guaranteed.
