Matt Christian could feel the emotion drain from Arizona Stadium when New Mexico State, playing its first bowl game in 57 years, allowed a 97-yard kick-return touchdown just after settling for a short field goal on its opening drive in the 2017 Arizona Bowl against Utah State.

Christian, the Aggies’ running backs coach and co-special teams coordinator, gathered his kick-return unit for a pep talk during the ensuing TV timeout, when soft-spoken sophomore running back Jason Huntley stepped to the middle of the huddle.
