Some Detroit Lions kneel, others leave field during national anthem before season opener

The Detroit Lions took a unique approach to the playing of the national anthem for today’s season opener at Ford Field.

Several players left the field and entered a tunnel behind the team benches at the anthem began to be played over the public-address system. The rest of the team, including coach Matt Patricia, stayed on the field.

Most of the players on the field for the anthem stood but a few kneeled, including quarterback Matthew Stafford, running back Adrian Peterson. Long snapper Don Muhlbach and receiver Jamal Agnew stood next to Peterson and placed their hands on his shoulders.
