ORLANDO — The Seattle Seahawks hoped to retain cornerback DeShawn Shead when they gave him a pass into free agency this spring, but Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the Lions ultimately made too rich an offer for his team to match.

"Loved him," Carroll told the Free Press at the NFL's annual meeting Monday at the Ritz-Carlton. "We couldn’t afford him, but we loved him."

The Seahawks released Shead, a 15-game starter in 2016, before the start of free agency this month even though they could have let his contract toll and kept him around for next season at the cost of just $1.
