If Washington NFL team can change nickname, so can high schools in Michigan

Some football fans are upset while others support "retiring" the Redskins name and Indian head logo from the Washington DC-based NFL team. It follows pressure from sponsors and decades of criticism that they are offensive to Native Americans. (July 13) AP Domestic

Levi Rickert celebrated Monday. And if he’d had time, he’d have thrown a retirement party. The Washington Redskins’ nickname and logo has finally been retired.

Or, as Rickert called it: “The R-word.”

“That’s how we refer to it,” Rickert said Monday. “It’s a racial slur.”
