The first time Chris Lacy went back to return kicks, in a November practice days before the Detroit Lions’ first game against the Chicago Bears, he got the green light every return man lives for: Bring the ball out, no matter how deep.

Lacy was emulating Cordarrelle Patterson, arguably the most dangerous returner in the NFL, on the Lions’ scout team that day, and did a good enough job that his coaches and teammates took notice.
