Detroit Lions preseason announcer Fred McLeod passes away at age 67

According to several sources, long-time Detroit announcer Fred McLeod passed away Monday evening.

From 1984 to 2006, McLeod served as the play-by-play announcer for the Detroit Pistons. Prior to that, he had worked some local Tigers and Detroit Lions games, as well.

Just this summer, McLeod returned to Detroit after a stint with Fox Sports Ohio. He served as the local play-by-play announcer for the Detroit Lions during the preseason.

The Cleveland Cavaliers—who were blessed with McLeod as their play-by-play announcer for every season since 2006—released this following statement. Here’s a snippet:

One of the most accomplished and respected announcers in the NBA, Fred recently celebrated his 36th season of broadcasting games, having also spent 22 seasons announcing Detroit Pistons games, prior to returning home to join the Cavaliers in 2006.
