When he was in high school, Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia gained a special appreciation for Memorial Day.

Patricia played the trumpet in the marching band at Vernon Verona Sherrill High School in Sherrill, New York, and every year he would be called upon to attend ceremonies during the holiday that commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

“Memorial Day was always a day where I would have to go to the parades and the ceremonies and the stuff at the cemeteries,” Patricia told the Free Press.
