Free Press sports writer Carlos Monarrez grades the Detroit Lions on each selection during the 2019 NFL draft:
Pick: Jahlani Tavai, Hawaii inside linebacker
Grade: D-minus
This is the second-round pick? This seems like a crazy reach. He’s an unknown player from a second-tier conference who missed his final six games with a shoulder injury, though he still had 82 tackles. He missed the Senior Bowl and NFL combine and was arrested in a nightclub altercation last year. It seems like they passed on more promising cornerbacks like Greedy Williams and Justin Layne to reach for Tavai.
