Lions hire Ron Prince as assistant head coach

The Detroit Lions have hired former Kansas State head coach Ron Prince as assistant head coach and tight ends coach for the 2014 season.

Prince will join the Lions after spending just one season at Rutgers University as offensive coordinator in 2013. The 44-year old has been an assistant offensive line coach for both the Colts and Jaguars but has never held a tight ends coaching position.

Detroit's former tight ends coach Bobby Johnson will be the third member of Schwartz's staff to be replaced by Jim Caldwell, who hired Teryl Austin as defensive coordinator and Bill Sheridan as the linebackers coach.

Prince was fired in his only head coaching gig at Kansas State after going 17-20 and losing his only bowl appearance in three seasons. His pro-style offense lead Rutgers to just 365.2 yards per game (85th) and 26.5 points per game (77th) in 2013.
