Broncos to hire Greg Williams to coach defensive backs

The Broncos will hire Greg Williams as a defensive backs coach, an NFL source confirmed, with his focus likely on the cornerbacks. Williams was the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive backs coach the last two seasons and was previously an assistant on the Chargers’ defensive staff for seven years, coaching the linebackers and later the secondary.

In Denver, Williams joins Marcus Robertson, a safety-focused defensive backs coach who was hired in 2016 on Vance Joseph’s original staff.

The team parted with six assistants after their 5-11 season, including assistant defensive backs coach Johnnie Lynn. The Broncos haven’t settled on an exact title for Williams, but as they’ve revamped the coaching staff this season, they’ve appeared to have taken a specialist approach with some of their positional coaches.
