Broncos Analysis: John Elway’s free-agent strategy should shift toward keeping own players

Late in the season, a veteran Broncos player was speculating about what moves general manager John Elway might make in the offseason.

Out of nowhere, the player summed up the production of the Broncos’ 2019 free-agent/trade class.

“You know, there were games this year we had more than $100 million on the inactive list?” he said.

More like $140.8 million. That was the contract values of quarterback Joe Flacco ($66.4 million), right tackle Ja’Wuan James ($51 million) and cornerback Bryce Callahan ($21 million). They combined to appear in 11 games — eight by Flacco and three by James.
