The Washington Spirit have expanded their ownership group, with Virginia-based CEO Y. Michele Kang joining Steve Baldwin and Bill Lynch as a stakeholder in the NWSL club. Kang, the founder of healthcare IT provider Cognosante, is the first woman to own a stake in the Spirit, and among the first owners of Asian descent in the NWSL.
When reached by Black and Red United, the Spirit said that Kang and Baldwin are both equity partners in the club’s ownership structure, and that Baldwin’s role as managing partner means he will retain decision-making authority. The Spirit also said that the ownership change has had no impact on their planned moves into space at Audi Field and to relocate training to the as-yet-unfinished D.
