Why hasn’t D.C. United named a starting goalkeeper for MLS opener? ‘It’s Tuesday, man.’

As six productive weeks of training camp ends and D.C. United’s season opener nears, Ben Olsen has left himself with two outstanding issues: the captaincy and his starting goalkeeper.

On Tuesday, four days ahead of the 2018 debut at Orlando City, the eighth-year head coach deflected questions on both subjects by injecting humor into a series of half-answers.

While the captain’s job is more symbolic than anything else, the goalkeeping topic has taken on greater importance after longtime starter Bill Hamid departed for European opportunities this winter. David Ousted and Steve Clark split time evenly in the last two preseason games, but in each one, Ousted started.
