Washington Spirit ownership fight settled as Steve Baldwin agrees to sell to Y. Michele Kang

Steve Baldwin on Tuesday agreed to sell his controlling stake in the Washington Spirit to Y. Michele Kang, ending a long and contentious fight over who would own the National Women’s Soccer League champions.

Baldwin and Kang met Tuesday morning and reached agreement on a $35 million deal — one that Baldwin had resisted for months while attempting to sell his share for $10 million less to billionaire Todd Boehly. They later addressed players together at the team’s indoor training facility in Springfield, Va.

The Boehly proposal fizzled last month after the league’s board of governors cleared the way for the Spirit’s non-equity, nonvoting investors, many of whom backed Kang, to become shareholders.
