USMNT goalkeeper Zack Steffen to miss two World Cup qualifiers after positive coronavirus test

NASHVILLE — U.S. national team goalkeeper Zack Steffen was ruled out of the next two World Cup qualifiers after testing positive for the coronavirus, the U.S. Soccer Federation said Sunday.

The presumed starter had missed Thursday’s qualifying opener in El Salvador because of back spasms, which might have sidelined him for Sunday’s game against Canada, as well.

The federation said the testing issue arose before his back had been evaluated. Steffen, a former University of Maryland standout, did not travel with the team to San Salvador. Sometime during the delegation’s trip, he received a positive test in Nashville.
