Zack Steffen, the first-choice goalkeeper for the U.S. men’s national soccer team, was a late scratch Thursday from a list of European-based players scheduled to report to training camp ahead of must-win Concacaf Nations League matches.
Steffen, a former Maryland Terrapin who starts for Fortuna Düesseldorf in the German Bundesliga, will miss the games against Canada next Friday in Orlando and Cuba on Nov. 19 in the Cayman Islands, the U.S. Soccer Federation said. Atlanta United’s Brad Guzan is expected to start.
U.S. Coach Gregg Berhalter will not finalize his roster until Monday. He is currently conducting a pre-camp in Bradenton, Fla.
