UEFA ‘reintegrates’ nine of 12 Super League teams; holdouts could face disciplinary measures

Nine of the 12 founding teams behind the Super League formally recommitted to UEFA, European soccer’s ruling body, on Friday, agreeing to a series of measures just weeks after the competition was announced and imploded within 72 hours.

“In a spirit of reconciliation, and for the good of European football, nine of the 12 clubs involved in the so-called ‘Super League’ project submitted to UEFA a ‘Club Commitment Declaration’ setting out the position of the Clubs, including their commitment to UEFA Club Competitions as well as national club competitions,” UEFA said in a statement.

The Super League drew the ire of soccer fans around the world for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was that it was a “closed” competition, similar to American sports leagues, and abandoned European soccer traditions of promotion and relegation.
