When he saw the video footage of flood waters inundating southern Louisiana this month – of cars bobbing down streets like bath toys, of sandbags futilely guarding property, of the volunteer Cajun Navy rescuing stranded homeowners – D.C. United’s Patrick Mullins was reminded of how his life was flipped upside down 11 years ago this weekend.
“I know what these people are going through, to a certain extent,” he said Friday. “It brought back some painful memories, the uncertainty of what was next.”
In August 2005, Mullins was 13, a few days into eighth grade.
