NWSL suspends Washington Spirit player in aftermath of forfeits

The National Women’s Soccer League on Friday suspended Washington Spirit backup goalkeeper Devon Kerr for one match for “failing to follow team staff directives,” the latest setback for an organization that forfeited two matches for pandemic-related violations and has been riddled with internal turmoil.

The league did not specify Kerr’s transgression, but people familiar with the matter said she violated pandemic protocol by traveling when Spirit players were told by the medical staff to remain in market. Kerr had been cleared by a team official, however, that it was okay to travel, one person said.

That trip, those people said, contributed to the Spirit forfeiting the Sept.
