Marta buries penalty kick — and Spirit’s 16-game unbeaten run

During the decisive moment, Aubrey Kingsbury’s head was not in the game. Well, not entirely on Saturday’s game, at least.

The veteran Washington Spirit goalkeeper remembered when Orlando Pride star Marta beat her to the right on a penalty kick last year. She also had seen Marta’s penalty kick to the keeper’s left saved during the Copa América Femenina final in August. Following a frenetic stretch Saturday that saw four goals in about 12 minutes of play and a critical penalty called in the 70th minute, Kingsbury again faced Marta in the penalty area, guessing the Brazilian would aim right.
