For U.S. soccer, Olympic and World Cup qualifying will intersect next month

With the expected announcement of Frisco, Tex., as the venue for the Olympic men’s qualifying playoff, U.S. soccer is set for one of the most important days on the 2016 calendar. Actually, two days.

On both March 25 and 29, the under-23 squad and senior national team will play critical matches against Colombia and Guatemala, respectively.

The U-23s have home and away games to determine the final berth in this summer’s Olympics in Brazil. The national team is in the middle of group play in CONCACAF’s semifinal round for 2018 World Cup qualifying.

Avaya Stadium in San Jose was the early front-runner for the home leg of the Olympic playoff, but as the Insider reported last week, Toyota Stadium moved to the forefront, in part because of easier travel from Colombia and no time change after the first leg.
