English soccer clubs leave Super League, and more exits are expected in a stunning reversal

The European Super League, a renegade competition hatched by 12 of soccer’s most powerful clubs, was on the brink of collapse Tuesday night, about 48 hours after its controversial launch drew widespread backlash from the sport’s ruling bodies, its global fan base and even heads of state.

With opposition seemingly growing by the hour, all six English clubs announced their intentions to withdraw. According to multiple reports, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona were also in the process of ending their association with the Super League.

Manchester City was the first in England to backtrack, followed by Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur — know as the Premier League’s “Big Six.
