In just one year of coaching the U.S. women’s national soccer team, Emma Hayes has extended close to two dozen first-time invitations to training camp. Most have gone to young players seeking a place in the talent pool as the 2027 World Cup draws closer.
At 32, Lo’eau LaBonta did not seem to figure into Hayes’s plans. A 10-year NWSL midfielder, the 5-foot-1 LaBonta had built a fine pro career and a big following among fans enamored with her tenacious play and colorful personality.
