Amid the fierce competition for playing time in D.C. United’s crowded midfield, one thing seemed certain through training camp: Paul Arriola would have a place in the starting lineup, whether on one of the flanks or in the middle of the formation.
But after Arriola injured his right knee in a preseason match Saturday in Tampa, a setback that could sideline him for months, Olsen and his melancholy crew were coming to terms Sunday with having to navigate the season without one of their most important figures.
Arriola, 25, underwent an MRI exam Sunday morning in Florida, a team spokesman said.
