D.C. United is on the brink of finalizing the most expensive deal in club history by acquiring U.S. national team midfielder Paul Arriola from Mexican club Tijuana, the Insider has learned.
United would have to pay a transfer fee in excess of $3 million to Tijuana and a considerable amount to the Los Angeles Galaxy for Arriola’s MLS rights, as well as a salary of more than$1 million.
Arriola, 22, is believed to be traveling to Washington.
The revelation comes amid a flurry of activity by United, MLS’s bottom-dwellers with a 5-14-4 record, ahead of MLS’s trade and transfer deadline at midnight Wednesday.
