D.C. United news and notes

Center back Steve Birnbaum has rejoined D.C. United after five weeks of U.S. national team duty for Copa America Centenario. But in his first session Monday, he suffered a minor hip injury and skipped Tuesday’s session. Coach Ben Olsen said he expects Birnbaum to resume training Wednesday ahead of the team flight that day to Utah for Friday’s match against Real Salt Lake.

Bobby Boswell, the other first-choice central defender, is also both back in the mix after missing the 2-0 victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday while serving an MLS-imposed suspension.

In their absence, Kofi Opare and Jalen Robinson paired to help blank the Revolution.
