D.C. United has upgraded its defensive depth in unexpected fashion, claiming former Atlanta starter Chris McCann off waivers Tuesday.
He is scheduled to join the team in Florida on Wednesday for the last stage of training camp.
Atlanta and D.C. will clash in the season opener March 3 at Audi Field.
McCann, 31, started 21 league matches for the MLS Cup champions last season but, in a surprise move, was waived over the weekend.
“We are excited to acquire Chris and add real quality, versatility and experience to our group," General Manager Dave Kasper said in a written statement.
