Austria’s Marko Arnautović suspended one Euro match for insulting an opponent

Marko Arnautoviu0107, a star forward for Austria, was suspended for one match by UEFA for “insulting another player” during his team’s victory Sunday over North Macedonia.

Arnautoviu0107, the son of a Serbian father and Austrian mother, seemed to aim comments and gestures toward Egzon Bejtulai and Gjanni Alioski, both of whom have Albanian heritage, after scoring a late goal in Austria’s 3-1 victory. He was restrained by David Alaba, the team captain.

There is historic tension between Serbia and Albania and between Serbia and North Macedonia as well, but in suspending Arnautoviu0107, UEFA determined him to be guilty of misconduct rather than discrimination.
