Andy Najar won’t return to D.C. United as Ally Mackay begins to reshape roster

United did not exercise the option on Najar’s contract and doesn’t have plans to offer a new deal, people familiar with the situation said. He is eligible for MLS free agency.

With new general manager Ally Mackay beginning to put his stamp on the squad, United has until Friday to announce roster decisions related to contract options. On Thursday, club officials declined to comment on player matters.

The personnel moves come as Mackay is leading the effort to hire a coaching successor to Wayne Rooney, who departed after the Oct. 7 regular season finale.
