Mallory Pugh and Alex Morgan should have been opponents last weekend in a National Women’s Soccer League match. However, while Pugh scored the tiebreaking goal and helped set up a second for the Washington Spirit, Morgan missed the Orlando Pride’s visit to Maryland SoccerPlex because of a concussion.
But with Morgan cleared to play, they were on the same field Thursday not as foes but colleagues in the U.S. national team’s 4-1 victory over Mexico in a friendly before 14,360 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla.
Pugh, 19, provided the lead in the sixth minute with an easy finish of Megan Rapinoe’s cross for her 10th goal in 33 international appearances.
