A quiet rookie from D.C. United’s backyard shined brightly in his first MLS start

D.C. United’s 2-0 defeat in stormy Orlando on Wednesday was marked by conspicuous flaws: bungled scoring opportunities and defensive errors by two trustworthy players that resulted in goals.

Amid the darkness, United‘s most inexperienced player, Chris Odoi-Atsem, was a bright light in his first pro start. Providing relief at right back, the 2017 first-round draft pick from DeMatha High School and the University of Maryland rushed the flank at opportune times and wasn’t rattled over 90 minutes.

Although Chris Korb stands to reclaim the job Saturday against the surging Los Angeles Galaxy at RFK Stadium, Odoi-Atsem continues positioning himself for playing time and perhaps an occasional start.
