The Stars have a math problem where the variables are changing every day and solutions seem more elusive than Walter White in the desert. But there is one constant in this formula -- nobody carries nine NHL defensemen during the regular season.
The biggest training camp issue for the Stars is how they whittle down nine defensemen into a workable group. Is that group seven? Is it eight? Is it seven with one veteran or prospect playing in the AHL?
These questions have been bouncing around for a while. Ever since the trio of Jamie Oleksiak, Stephen Johns and Patrik Nemeth needed waivers to be sent to the minors, Stars GM Jim Nill has decided running eight defensemen at the NHL level was the best option.
