The precise meaning is "relating to an uncle," but the broader definition is "a person who has the genial demeanor of an uncle" -- fatherly, and yet in a different sort of way.
Rick Wilson is avuncular. The Stars assistant coach has a style that is demanding, but with a gentle touch. He can get your attention simply by raising his eyebrows, but he can also support you during a time of need by putting his hand on your shoulder or patting you on the back.
