Drew Doughty signed a massive contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings for $88 million over the next eight years. Tyler Seguin is going to be signing his own extension before too long, but he would be risking a significant amount of money by following the structure of Doughty's contract. Jamie Benn's contract is a much better model for Seguin to follow.
Benn's contract guarantees him a significantly higher percentage of the money he signed up for than Doughty's deal because Benn's deal is effectively buyout proof. Benn is getting most of his salary, especially towards the end, in signing bonuses which makes it pointless to ever consider buying him out.
