Stars GM Jim Nill taking a cautious approach to Monday's NHL trade deadline

Jim Nill has a lot of trade deadline history swirling around in his head right now, most of it bad.

As a member of the Detroit Red Wings, Nill said he witnessed some massive trades in the days before the salary cap, and said he was surprised how often the deals didn't work out. The biggest was in 1999 when Detroit acquired Chris Chelios, Wendel Clark, Ulf Samuelsson and Bill Ranford at the deadline. They lost to Colorado in the second round of the playoffs.

"We have a plan and we know what the situation is. I like where we're at right now and I have a history of seeing things in this league," Nill said when asked about the possibility of a big move for the Stars at Monday's NHL trade deadline.
