Observations: Spending money on Stars’ biggest problem could be a smart investment

Jim Nill talks draft and Antti Niemi at the draft Saturday. Watch here.

Jim Nill two years ago acquired the contract of Shawn Horcoff and paid the depth forward $7 million over two seasons.

About the same time, he signed Sergei Gonchar to a two-year contract and was prepared to pay the then-39-year-old $10 million for two seasons.

And most fans didn’t have a problem with it.

Horcoff could add versatility and help the younger kids. Gonchar was the perfect teacher for Valeri Nichushkin. Both were still good players. Both had experience and could help in the playoffs.
