As the NHL reached the New Year, the races in each conference are relatively tight, with only a few clubs realistically out of range for a playoff spot. With less than two months until the trade deadline, general managers have to determine whether it makes more sense for their club to mortgage future assets and add a piece or two that could be the difference in making a postseason run or be realistic and move players with expiring contracts for prospects or draft picks before February 24.
