FRISCO -- The timeline of the remarkable life of Jermaine Loewen:
Born in Jamaica. Given up by his birth parents at age one. Raised in a childrens' home in Jamaica for five years.
Adopted by a Canadian couple who had come to the island to help in the cleanup from Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The storm tore off the roof of the home where Loewen was living.
Taken to a small town (Arborg) about one hour north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, by his adoptive parents. Puzzled by new things such as snow and skates.
Started playing organized hockey at age 11, ridiculously late by Canadian standards.
