Mavs GEM Program Helps Students Discover Career Paths and Possibilities

It’s an age-old question we’ve all considered at one point or another. For middle and high schoolers at Dallas ISD’s IDEA and STEAM institutes, that question remains top of mind with career-connected learning embedded in the daily curriculum.

But who really has it all figured out at that age?

It was exactly these questions that inspired the Dallas Mavericks’ GEM (Girls Empowered by Mavericks) program to expand its impact during the Spring semester and engage students through a newly developed “speed networking” opportunity.

“We already do a lot of targeted conversations— we talk about mental and physical health, nutrition, financial literacy, and STEM programming, so I thought why not combine all of that into one event,” said Kristen “KJ” Grassi, Mavs Academy manager, who also oversees GEM programming for the team.
