While history has a way of fading from our memories, the NBA reminded us on Sunday evening of a piece of Dallas Mavericks’ history that set the foundation of what would become one of the league’s best and most respected franchises.
Don Nelson took over the moribund Mavericks in 1997 and with some gutsy trades, smart coaching and one particularly shrewd draft pick, he resurrected them from a ’90s laughingstock into a decade-plus powerhouse.
